Inspiration From The Everday: Children's Books

With my two little girls, we spend many moments reading together. Some children’s books are real gems for their drawings and the stories they tell. I already took a lot of inspiration from children’s book to realize my layouts so I immediately thought about doing this to show you one of my everyday inspirations.

I chose a book entitled La colère de Banshee (Banshee’s Wrath) written by "Jean-François Chabas" and illustrated by David Sala. I love this colored and enchanted universe. It seems to me that this universe is itself inspired by one of my favorite painters, Klimt.







So I took my inspiration from the colors of the drawings to create this layout entitled "Smiles". I created a frame with superimposed flowers and buttons, just like the illustrator did in the book with his recurring colored circles. I also cut the wave of a Beach Bum paper to recreate the wave on the drawing. Finally, I wrote the journaling part like the way it is written in the book.



Getting your inspiration from children’s books enables you to create layouts using different collections. To make this one, I allowed myself to combine many different papers: Beach Bum, Saint Nick, Off To School papers with a Baby Mine Flocked Transparency and flowers and buttons from various collections.

Days Before Christmas Frame by Iris Babao Uy
Iris says, "I took an old frame which was missing the glass cover, removed the photo, and replaced it with the solid colored papers from the Saint Nick Collection. After that, instead of putting a new glass cover on it, I placed a printed Saint Nick Transparency...

I then added letters which spelled 'Days Before Christmas', handed a white board marker to my daughter and let her have fun recording the number of days leading to Christmas."

Yuka says, "First of all, I cut Saint Nick Printed Transparency along the shape of the ornament. I turned over the transparency and glitter cuts of the ornament and used it as a mask. At the end, I piled Flocked transparency and Printed transparency and pasted it. Layering is so fun!"

Yuki says, “Have you finished documenting the pictures of the holidays? I used both the Saint Nick Flocked and Printed Transparency on my Holiday page. I have cut each pattern out and put it on the picture, under the picture, and on the another transparency —I could put it anywhere I wanted. I really love to use the layer of transparencies on my projects."

Fancy This: Perpetual Desk Calendar

Hi everyone! Happy Christmas to you all!!
I hope that wherever you are you are celebrating the Holidays with family & friends. I have a fun project to share with you today.

With the New Year around the corner I decided to show you how to make a Perpetual Desk Calendar to usher in 2012. It is a simple, yet stylish way to make sure you always know what the date is no matter the time of year.

Fancy Pants supplies:
Off to School: Strips patterned paper
Off to School: Flash cards patterned paper
Off to School: no. 2 pencils patterned paper
Off to School: Favorite teacher patterned paper
Off to School: School year patterned paper
Off to School: Chipboard banner stickers
Artist Edition: Black chipboard alphas stickers

Other supplies:
Modge Podge
Tombow Hook & Loop adhesive tabs
Variety of small punches
Sewing machine
Download & print box templates (you can download the pdf here.)

Instructions:
Step #1:
Select your patterned papers, embellishments & download & print out the box templates onto cardstock.


Step #2:
Once you have cut your box shape out of cardstock, score fold lines & assemble.

Your boxes will look like this~ x2 cubes will sit comfortably on top of the rectangle box.


Step #3:
Cut x6 squares of patterned paper to decorate your x6 sided cube & x6 pieces to decorate your rectangle box. Use your box template as a guide for the sizes.


Step #4:
Adhere to boxes.

Step #5:
Cut x12 labels from  no. 2 pencils patterned paper. You will need the following alphas: Box 1= 0,1,2,3,4,7; Box 2= 0,1,2,5,8,9 ( the 9 will double as the 6).


Step #6:
Adhere labels & alphas to cubes & decorate with layered punched shapes. Remember to keep your embellishments as flat as possible.


Step #7:
Stick a hook & loop tab in the centre of the x2 chipboard banner shapes.


Step #8:
Create your 'month' labels from a piece of School year patterned paper & chipboard alphas. Stitch through for added strength, when pulling on & off the box.


Step #9:
Place your completed cubes on their stand & find 'set' today's date!

(NB: For longevity I would Modge-Podged this project, to protect it from finger prints & dirty marks. It'll make it stronger too.)

Product Spotlight: Saint Nick Rub-ons

Hello again everyone! We hope you are getting some great holiday ideas here on the Fancy Pants blog. Here's a few more for you using our Saint Nick Rub-ons.

Holiday Tags by Leah Farqharson
Leah says, "The rub-ons from Fancy Pants have always been a favorite of mine! I loved using them in several ways to create these fun holiday themed tags for today. On both of them, I used the smaller rub-on images to create a background for the tag—the santa one has the Ho! Ho! Ho! text that I cut apart and pieced together to create the background...

and the tree tag has just a few snowflakes sprinkled in. The santa himself is a rub-on added to cardstock and then cut out...

I used the same technique of adding the rub-on to cardstock on the tree tag to make the snowflake layer of the rosette. They're always so easy to work with, you're sure to come up with something great!"

 

Gift Packaging by Rachel Tucker
Rachel says, "It’s that time of year that we are thinking about gifts. I love gift wrapping so much that at times I spend more time on the wrap than actually buying the gift! I’ve used the Fancy Pants Saint Nick Rub-ons to turn a plain noodle box into a cute Christmas treat. The perfect gift for a neighbour or teacher filled with chocolate truffles.

Want to make your own ?  It is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Take a plain white noodle box (you will find them at your local craft supply store). Fill with homemade chocolate truffles. Carefully adorn with some Fancy Pants Rub-ons, embellish with a glass bauble filled with your favourite Fancy Pants scrapbooking paper, a touch of tinsel, embellishments, a tag and your done."

Fancy This: Christmas Ornaments

Don’t you just love this time of the year? Christmas is my favorite time of the year! I just love all the traditions we do each year. One tradition that we have always done in our family is to add to our Christmas ornament collection each year. Each child gets a new ornament. I made these ornaments out of the Saint Nick collection. These were quick and easy, and a lot of fun!

The fan fold rosettes are all the rage right now, so I had to make an ornament using those!  So easy!  There are tutorials all over the internet for these, and even die cut templates you can use with your die cutting machines.

I finished the ornament with some Saint Nick Filter Embellishments and added a star charm from the Fancy Pants Designs Artist Edition Charm set.  The Santa face is trimmed from one of the Saint Nick Embellishment Cards.  I finished it off with gold glitter spray.
 
The second ornament is a play on the wreath that Jodi showed in a Studio 5 segment back in July.  You can watch the video here.


I used 2” squares for the first row, and 1.5 inch squares for the top layer.  Just remember to use a strong adhesive—glue dots or a liquid adhesive worked better for me than a runner.  I added a Saint Nick Filter Embellishment and a chip board embellishment to the front and back--I always like to put a little something on the back of the ornament to make it look finished—you know they never seem to hang facing forward all the time!!  And again, finish with gold glitter spray.
 
I first saw the idea for this cute little gift bag at our Scrapfest Crop in Minneapolis!


One of our guests was making them for Halloween—I wish I could remember her name!  I made bunches of these using the Summer’s End collection for a crop in November, and they were a huge hit!  A cute and fun way to give treats, gift cards or small gifts.  You can find the tutorial here.
